The production and drainage of tears can be compared to the functioning of a sink. The eye may water due to excessive tear production (the tap is running too fast) or because the tears produced are not draining properly (the drain is blocked). Therefore, it is essential to identify the precise cause to apply the appropriate treatment.Shutterstock

It depends on the cause. If there is an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, the most effective option is Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery. This is a safe technique that restores normal tear drainage.

The cause of watering eyes in children is usually an obstruction from birth (congenital) of the final part of the tear duct. In most cases, this resolves spontaneously during the first year of life. During that time, you can help open it by massaging the tear duct area. If spontaneous opening is not achieved after this time, probing of the tear duct is indicated. This involves passing a fine probe to open the membrane causing the obstruction. It is a quick and simple procedure performed under light sedation and does not require hospital admission.
